The Conditions and Terms of Use which follow refer not to the material found on
the Heritage History website, but to the contents of the Compact Libraries sold
on this site. These terms apply only to purchasers of Heritage History Compact Libraries,
and are included on the Heritage History Store Menu for information purposes only.
For questions regarding the the use of resources on the
Heritage History Website, see our primary
Terms of Use page.
Compact Library Copyright Notification
Heritage History Compact Libraries include material that is derived from
public-domain sources, and also original material.
The copyright restrictions on each item in our library is clearly
indicated. Please read the following conditions carefully, and determine the status
of each resource in our libraries to determine whether it can be legally reproduced.
The mission of Heritage History is to promote and popularize the works of
classical juvenile history authors. We created our Compact Libraries specifically
to make these public-domain works easy to use and inexpensive to access. We therefore
provide generous terms for the reproduction and distribution of the public-domain
material in our libraries, but we require that the few restrictions that we place
on these texts be strictly adhered to.
We also require that original content which has been developed by Heritage History
remain proprietary to our libraries, so we have placed it under copyright protection
with all rights reserved. The original content, therefore, may not be
duplicated or disseminated under any conditions. Although individual books within our
collection may be reproduced with few restrictions, the complete contents of our libraries, including
the navigation system, book and series descriptions, and other study aids and
supporting material may not be copied. Only those text files which we have
derived from public domain sources can be reproduced, and even they are subject
to restrictions.
The manner in which we assure that the history books used as sources for the
Compact Libraries are no longer copyright protected is explained on
the Frequently Asked Questions page, but in
short, all of our sources were published before 1923, so their original copyright
has expired. The material we have produced from these sources, however,
is the property of Heritage History and cannot be reproduced except under the
terms prescribed below.
The original text in our libraries is in HTML format (Hyper text markup language) and
includes everything contained in the "directory" file folder. This material includes
our book and series summaries, navigation aids, study materials, general information
files and all related materials. All of the original material in the Compact Library
contains the following copyright.
The original content of our libraries was created in order to provide a convenient
navigation system for browsing our collection of books, images, and
other resources. In a "real"
library one can use directories to locate books of particular interest, and
browse shelves to compare offerings. The interactive environment that we have
provided for our Compact Libraries provides a similar experience, by allowing
users to peruse our selections, make comparisons, and view information
while searching for books of interest.
Heritage History wishes to maintain this system as proprietary, and therefore
we forbid copying or redistributing any of our original content, even for personal
or educational use. Please respect these restrictions.
Public Domain Texts
All of the texts in our library that were derived from public domain sources
have been converted to PDF files (Adobe Acrobat, Portable Document Format).
Each of these files includes an original copyright notification and a Heritage History
distribution date, shown as follows:
Original copyright 1920 by Lawton Evans
Distributed by Heritage History 2009
In addition to the copyright information given above, which is printed at the
bottom of every page, a Terms of Usage notification is given on the second page
of each book. The text of the usage notification is given as follows:
This text was produced and distributed by Heritage History, an organization dedicated to the
preservation of classical juvenile history books, and to the promotion of the works of traditional
history authors.
The books which Heritage History republishes are in the public domain and are no longer protected
by the original copyright. They may therefore be reproduced within the United States without
paying a royalty to the author.
The text and pictures used to produce this version of the work, however, are the property of
Heritage History and are licensed to individual users with some restrictions. These restrictions
are imposed for the purpose of protecting the integrity of the work itself, for preventing plagiarism,
and for helping to assure that compromised or incomplete versions of the work are not widely distributed.
In order to preserve information regarding the origin of this text, a copyright by the author,
and a Heritage History distribution date are included at the foot of every page of text. We request
all electronic and printed versions of this text include these markings and that users adhere to
the following restrictions.
This text may be reproduced for personal or educational purposes as long as the original
copyright and Heritage History version number are faithfully reproduced.
You may not alter this text or try to pass off all or any part of it as your own work.
You may not distribute copies of this text for commercial purposes unless you have the prior
written consent of Heritage History.
This text is intended to be a faithful and complete copy of the original document. However,
typos, omissions, and other errors may have occurred during preparation, and Heritage History does
not guarantee a perfectly reliable reproduction.
Permission to use Heritage History documents or images for commercial purposes, or more information
about our collection of traditional history resources can be obtained by contacting us at
Infodesk@heritage-history.com.
Maps and Illustrations
Many of the books included in Heritage History's Compact Libraries contain
high quality images. Classical juvenile histories books were often lavishly
illustrated, and each Compact Library contains an image directory, in which
several hundred of the best illustrations in each collection are listed.
Heritage History permits the use of the maps and images in these directories
only for personal and educational use. Under some conditions we will allow
use of these images for commercial or public purposes, but only with prior
written permission for each specific use, and sometimes after the payment of
a small fee.
These pictures have been provided primarily for the use of history instructors and
students. They can be freely used in slide-shows, power-point presentations, projects,
reports, or videos, as long as they are employed for personal or educational purposes.
Heritage History frequently receives requests for use of our images on other web pages.
Although we do not allow images to be copied and posted on other website, we do
allow the images on our website to be sourced by other web pages.
As long as images are sourced directly from our website, no additional attribution is
necessary. Our images can be sourced in HTML files using the following syntax.
. . where "macgregor" is the name of the author, "greece" is a one-word identifier for the book, and "zpage310.gif"
is the name of the image file itself.
The images that we have made available on both our website, and on our compact libraries are relatively
low resolution files, due to both space and performance considerations. We do have high
resolution (300 bpi), versions of most of our images, but they are only
available on special request. The exception to this is our maps, all of which
are presented in high resolution, since low resolution maps are frequently unreadable.
If you have any further questions about the usage of Heritage Histories text and images,
or if you would like to use our images for commercial or public purposes, we can be
contacted at Infodesk@heritage-history.com.
